From “playing next to you” to “belonging to the group”

It has been shown that school is the first organized environment outside the family where a child learns to function as a member of a wider society. At school we don’t only learn letters – we learn to be together! That is because socialization radically changes a child’s behavior, depending on their age and needs.

What does “socializing” actually mean?

It means learning to be “me” within “we”.

At school, children come into daily contact with peers of different characters, interests and ways of thinking. They play, talk, laugh, cooperate, disagree and find their balance again.

They learn to wait their turn, to listen, to follow rules, to take part in a group and to take on responsibilities. Through a group project, a game, a school celebration or even a quarrel at recess, they gain valuable life experience.

Contact with peers

The first bell rings. A classroom fills with children. Some already know each other, some are meeting for the first time. One child finds it hard to say goodbye to their parent, another runs straight off to play. And that is how one of the most important lessons of school life begins: learning to coexist.

Cooperation and conflict management

School is not only the place where children learn to write, read and gain knowledge. It is a small society in which they discover every day how to communicate, cooperate, make friends, manage their disagreements and respect others without losing their own identity.

Because even a disagreement can become a lesson:

• How do I express what I feel?
• How do I listen to the other person?
• When do I need to give way?
• How do I stand up for myself without hurting anyone?

What it offers to a child’s development

Through daily contact with others, the child gradually gains greater independence and self-confidence. They learn to function without the constant presence of their family and to face challenges, small and large, on their own.

At the same time, they begin to shape their personal and social identity. They discover what they like, what they believe, where they feel they belong, and also what makes them different.

And, perhaps most importantly, they develop skills that will stay with them throughout their lives: communication, cooperation, empathy, respect, conflict resolution and acceptance of diversity.

Key characteristics at each stage of education

• In kindergarten, the big step is the first real entry into the group. The child gradually moves away from the safety of the family and discovers that they can feel safe in a new environment too. Play becomes their main “tool”: they learn to share, to wait, to ask and to cooperate. The teacher acts as a steady point of reference, guidance and security.
• In primary school, friendships become more important. Stable groups of friends form, and the child looks more for the acceptance of their peers. The rules of the group become more complex, and with them come more intense disagreements. The teacher helps children find ways to communicate and resolve conflicts.
• In lower and upper secondary school, friends and the group carry even more weight. Teenagers look for independence, test their limits and gradually shape their own identity. They want to belong, but at the same time they want to stand out. Friendships become deeper, groups form and first romantic relationships develop. At this age the teacher is not only the person who sets rules. They become more of a conversation partner and mediator, giving teenagers space to express opinions, concerns and feelings.

From play to social awareness

In younger ages, socialization happens mainly through play, song, creation, movement and imitation. In this way children learn through experience to listen, to wait, to share and to cooperate.

As they grow, the questions change:

• Who am I?
• Which group do I belong to?
• How much does other people’s opinion affect me?
• Can I be different and still be accepted?

In adolescence, socialization is increasingly linked to empathy and social awareness. Young people talk about what is happening around them, think about social issues, take part in groups and can take initiative and join volunteer actions.

So, what is the most important lesson?

Perhaps that no one grows up alone.

Every friendship, every game, every act of cooperation, even every small conflict at school can become an opportunity for a child to get to know themselves and others a little better.

Because socialization doesn’t simply mean that a child has friends. It means being able to communicate, to listen, to express oneself, to cooperate, to respect diversity and to find one’s place in a group without losing one’s uniqueness.

And these are lessons that don’t end with the last bell.

Spithes, the creative team, invites children to take part in an innovative educational programme that combines imagination, play, creative writing and technology.

Through five interactive sessions, children will create their own character and bring it to life through the magic of stop-motion animation and Augmented Reality (AR). An imaginative journey of self-expression, learning and technology for children who love to create!

Part 1: Creative Writing and Character Creation (3 Sessions)

Session 1: Children discover the power of words and imagination through creative writing games and drama-based activities.

Session 2: Children develop their initial ideas for their story and character, then create a unique character of their own. Together, we explore the scanned image or drawing submitted by each child.

Session 3: Children discuss and explore the scanned image or drawing they have submitted. They develop their character’s short story and complete the writing process, discovering essential character-development techniques and storytelling elements.

Part 2: Stop-Motion Animation and Augmented Reality (2 Sessions)

Session 4: Children take their first steps into the world of stop-motion animation. They create their character using any materials they like, such as modelling clay, drawings, everyday objects or toys. They then bring their character to life, giving it a voice and introducing it to the audience in a short animated film.

Session 5: Children discover the possibilities of Augmented Reality (AR) filters. Using AR technology, they transform themselves into their characters by digitally wearing a mask they have designed and drawn themselves. They then create short videos in which their characters tell a little story.

Elpida Minadaki

Elpida Minadaki loves fairy tales and the magic they create. She is fascinated by their power to transport us to magical worlds while teaching us important lessons and revealing truths through enchanting stories. Fairy tales, she believes, can convey meaningful messages to audiences of all ages.

She studied Journalism and graduated from the Athinaiki Skini Drama School. She also holds a postgraduate qualification in Comedy Writing from Falmouth University. Her short-film screenplay received an award in a competition organised by Pfizer.

She works as a copywriter, screenwriter, children’s author and actress. Her children’s books, filled with imagination and warmth, include Litsa the Little Plastic Bag (Oselotos Publications), The Ballerina Who Didn’t Dance (Ydroplano Publications), The Journey of the Red Umbrella (Kedros Publications), The Magic Buttons & the Shower of Stars (Livani Publications), The Rescue of Neramygí (Ydroplano Publications), and The Red Umbrella’s New Adventures: Travelling with the Wright Brothers (Michalis Sideris Publications).

She has also contributed to several collaborative publications with the Women’s Literary Society.

With more than ten years of experience, she has been leading creative writing workshops and experiential activities for children and teenagers, fostering imagination, self-expression and empathy through the art of storytelling.

She also teaches creative writing in schools, municipalities, foundations and museums. She founded Spithes (www.spithes.com), a creative team that develops educational programmes for children.

She is a member of the Greek Children’s Book Circle, the Greek section of IBBY; the Women’s Literary Society; the Union of Greek Screenwriters; ADHD Hellas, an organisation supporting people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; and a founding member of Assitej Greece, the Greek Network for Theatre for Children and Young People.

Ilias Florakis

Ilias Florakis began his artistic career as a writer of unusual and unconventional stories, publishing Charlie’s Little Bar (Kastaniotis Publications), The Therapist (Agkyra Publications) and 13 Past Midnight (Greek Screenwriters’ Publications). His literary work has also received recognition through numerous publications and awards.

From 2006 to 2019, he taught creative writing. In 2011, he wrote and directed the theatrical monologue Je t’aime, which won the Original Script Award and received an Honourable Mention for Female Performance at the Patras Satirical Theatre Festival. That same year, he staged the black comedy White Pages.

Since 2012, he has been working in film, focusing on screenwriting, editing and directing. His short films have been selected for competition and have received distinctions at numerous film festivals in Greece and abroad.

In 2014, he founded CineLike Lab, a mixed-media filmmaking workshop for children.

In 2017, his film Kalik, the Little Creator won the Grand Prize at the 19th Seoul Youth Film Festival. In 2021, The Grey Jungle received an Honourable Mention at the Stone Flower Youth Film Festival in Russia. In 2024, his film Learning won the Innovative Film Award at the 11th Plasencia Encorto International Youth Film Festival in Spain.

From 2015 to 2023, he collaborated with the Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Young People and Camera Zizanio, delivering filmmaking workshops for children under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education.

He also leads professional development seminars for primary and secondary school teachers.

He is a member of the Union of Greek Screenwriters, where he also works as a script analyst. In addition, he serves on the juries of screenplay competitions and delivers seminars organised by the Union.

Spithes is once again joining forces with CineLike Lab under the educational programme of the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation, offering an exciting new educational experience that combines creative writing with animation and augmented reality (AR).

Through close observation of artworks and guided explorations of the Foundation’s exhibitions, children create their own stories and then transform them into moving images. The programme nurtures imagination, storytelling, visual literacy and collaboration, while introducing children to the world of filmmaking.

A special evening where fashion meets energy, expression, and social contribution

Can a piece of clothing express something more than our personal style? Can it carry a message, an intention, a positive thought?

ELFashionDesign presents “WEAR YOUR ENERGY – Fashion • Energy • Expression,” a distinctive event dedicated to fashion, creativity, and the power of positive expression, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Myrtillo Café.

At the heart of the evening is a unique fashion show of “energy garments,” designed by fashion designer Louiza Katsigianni and ElfDesign. Women’s clothing connected to color, symbolism, personal expression, and female empowerment. Creations that carry their own identity and convey positive statements, inviting the audience to see fashion not only as an aesthetic choice, but also as a way to bring more of what we want into our lives.

The experience is complemented by the presence of crystals, referencing their colors, symbolism, and energy, while music will also have its place in the evening, with Nadi Ray performing live. The presentation will be hosted by Elpida Minadaki, author and actress, who will open the evening with a short talk on the power of words and positive affirmations, and will also sign the positive statements accompanying the creations.

The non-profit organization SPITHES (ΣΠΙΘΕΣ) will take part in the event, reinforcing the connection between creativity, positive thinking, and social contribution.

Alongside the show, a bazaar with orders will be running in the venue, and guests will also have the chance to discover the children’s books written by Elpida Minadaki.

The evening also carries a social character, as entry costs €3 with participation in a raffle, and proceeds from admission will go toward supporting the social work of Myrtillo Café.

“WEAR YOUR ENERGY” aims to be more than just a fashion event: a gathering of people and ideas around creativity, personal expression, and positive energy.

Because what we wear can also be what we choose to radiate.

By the term customs, we refer to the stable and consistent habits of a people, which are usually closely connected to their folk traditions, religious beliefs, and national roots. They reflect the past, shape the present, and lay the foundations for the future. They represent a society’s culture and help form its historical and national identity.

From Sunday family meals to festive celebrations, traditions offer much more than pleasant moments—they play a crucial role in a child’s development. Through these consistent practices, children develop a sense of security, belonging, and identity—elements that shape their character and who they will become in the future. From weekend pancake mornings to holiday gatherings, these customs lay the groundwork for children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. As children grow, traditions provide stability, a sense of purpose, and emotional grounding.

Family traditions are unique practices that a family repeats regularly together. They can range from simple daily routines to more elaborate annual rituals. Whether it is a bedtime story, baking cookies, or an annual trip, these activities create opportunities for bonding, passing down values, and building lasting memories. They contribute to several key aspects of child development:

• Foundation of emotional security: Traditions offer stability in an ever-changing world. Knowing, for example, that Friday is movie night or that birthdays are always celebrated in a special way creates a sense of predictability and safety, which is essential for emotional development.
• Formation of identity: Traditions are often linked to cultural, religious, or personal values and help children understand their origins and what their family represents. This fosters a strong sense of identity, especially important during times of change.
• Strengthening family bonds: Through shared activities, parents and children connect meaningfully, cultivating trust, love, and mutual understanding.
• Boosting self-esteem: When children actively participate in traditions, they feel valued. Taking part in activities such as cooking or decorating enhances their confidence.
• Development of coping skills: Traditions serve as a source of comfort during difficult times, helping children understand that even when things change, some constants remain.
• Social and cognitive benefits: Family traditions help children develop social skills such as cooperation, kindness, and communication. At the same time, activities like storytelling, games, and crafts enhance creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Let us consider, for example, the tradition of the Easter candle.

The Easter candle is one of the most beloved and meaningful traditions of Greek culture, especially for children. It symbolizes Light and the Resurrection. According to Christian tradition, the Resurrection of Christ brings light to the world and conveys a message of hope—the triumph of life over death. The candle, as a source of light, represents this idea of life, hope, and spiritual purity.

The offering of the candle by a godparent to a child is not merely a gift, but a spiritual act that connects the child to Christian tradition and the life of the Church. The candle thus becomes a symbol of Christ’s light, illuminating the child’s life and guiding their spiritual journey.

Conclusion

Tradition, customs, and cultural practices are the chain that connects generations. Through tradition, there is no divide. Our generation is connected to those before us, as well as to those yet to come. At the same time, tradition is a prerequisite for the existence of culture, since no generation creates its culture from nothing.

Especially today, when industrialized culture has taken on a universal character that often eliminates the process of selection, it is essential that participation in global culture be combined with the stability that tradition provides. We need traditional knowledge to preserve our historical identity, without rejecting or disregarding the identities of other nations. Every nation has something valuable to contribute to culture.

Customs and traditions, therefore, act as channels of communication and expression, through which understanding is achieved and social relationships are strengthened. Their value is immeasurable, as they are rooted in authenticity. For all these reasons, it is essential that we pass them on to our children.

Part A: Creative Writing & Character Creation

Children take their first steps into stop motion animation. They create their hero in any way they like (clay, drawing, objects, or toys) and make their character speak and introduce themselves by creating a short animated film.

Children are introduced to Augmented Reality (AR) filters. With the help of AR, they become their own heroes by digitally “wearing” the mask they have designed. They create short videos in which their hero tells a brief story.

More than 2,000 middle and high school students from across Crete—representing both mainstream and special education schools—braved the weather conditions and made a strong presence. On stage, they presented imaginative and thought-provoking creations: theatrical performances, videos, monologues, songs, musical acts, and much more.

Spithes had the joy and honor of actively participating, implementing experiential activities with the children and sending a powerful message about the importance of Children’s Rights and equality in practice.

Warm thanks go to the Deputy Regional Governor for Culture and Equality, Ms. Georgia Milaki, as well as the Special Advisor, Ms. Maria Vozikaki, for their meaningful contribution. We also thank everyone who worked to make this festival a reality.

Equality4 Crete once again proved that when regional authorities, education, and society work together, initiatives are born that inspire, unite, and create space for children’s voices to be heard.

Through creative workshops and an abundance of positive energy, we shared our vision with visitors of all ages—informing, connecting, and inspiring new people to get actively involved.

A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful team members: Louiza Katsigianni, who tirelessly offered unique creative crafts for children, as well as Angela Angelopoulou, Chrysa Fili, Manos Fragakis, and Adamantia Katsarou from our new volunteer network. A Lesson of… Magical Imagination!

In this workshop, children aged 8–12 dive into a world where creative writing becomes play and storytelling transforms into a short theatrical performance. In a safe, joyful, and playful environment, children will:

• write a short story together as a team,

• bring characters to life through theatrical play,

The complete program that follows the open workshop offers a comprehensive creative experience:

• Practice in creative writing

• Story dramatization

• Publication of the children’s story in a small booklet

• Two outdoor inspiration trips

• Theatrical play, collaboration, and imagination development

• Improvement of speech and communication skills

• A short performance based on the children’s stories
